1. Provide Choices: The Math Menu

Empower your students by giving them choices in approaching their math learning. For example, create a “Math Menu” with a variety of activities or assignments for them to select from after a lesson or as an exit ticket. While some options should be mandatory to ensure core concepts are covered, providing choices within those options can increase engagement.

Some choices on the math menu can include:

  • Solving a math problem of the day.
  • Completing a math project.
  • Collaborating with peers on a math game.
  • Conducting a short math research project.

This approach encourages students to take ownership of their learning and select activities that align with their interests and strengths.

2. Provide Enrichment Activities

Enrichment activities provide students with opportunities to delve deeper into a subject, explore new topics, develop critical thinking skills, and pursue their interests. One classic enrichment activity is using task cards.

After completing their math workbook or during designated math centers, introduce math task cards. These cards are a collection of challenging math problems that encourage critical thinking and problem-solving. They can cover various topics, from basic arithmetic to more advanced concepts.

4. Make Math Relevant

One of the best ways to make math more engaging is to show students how it applies to the real world. Imagine transforming your classroom into a BBQ house! In this project, students get to run their own BBQ house business while tackling math problems related to the four fundamental operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Here’s how it works:

Beginning

At first, they will receive a welcome letter and a checklist. The checklist will guide them through the steps of building their BBQ house. Then, students will decide on the name, slogan, and location of their BBQ house. This introduces them to key concepts like branding and operating costs.

Math More Engaging project

Next, students will create a delectable menu for their BBQ house. This requires students to practice addition, multiplication, and subtraction. When students move on to prepare their virtual BBQ house, they’ll need to set up tables, chairs, and decorations while ordering utensils, skewers, etc. by solving 8 multiplication or division word problems.

Middle

During the project, students will also take on the roles of waitstaff and chefs, fulfilling customer orders. This requires quick mental math for addition and multiplication as they tally orders and handle payments. Besides, there are some word problems to challenge students.

Math More Engaging project

At the end of the “business day,” students will review their stock and calculate their remaining inventory. This reinforces subtraction as they determine what needs restocking for the next day. They will also compare the sales of different items.

End

Finally, students will tally up their earnings and understand the financial aspect of their BBQ business. This involves subtraction and multiplication as they calculate their profit and total profit. Additionally, students may use multiplication properties to solve the problems.

The “See You Soon” letter at the end indicates the end of the BBQ House project and encourages students to look forward to the next exciting math adventure.

In short, this immersive project not only reinforces math skills but also introduces entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and problem-solving in a real-world context. It’s a sizzling way to make math come alive!
